Why most options fall short

Dorms have lots of unlocked-door moments

Roommates come and go, friends drop in, cleaning staff has access. A laptop, watch, or wallet left visible can disappear in seconds.

Hardware cameras are visible — and roommates may object

An obvious wall-mounted camera in a shared room creates conflict. A discreet phone on your desk is much lower-friction socially.

Cloud cameras send your dorm interior to a vendor

If you're going to film your dorm, you don't want that feed to live on a third-party server forever. Especially with roommates in frame.

No camera-shaped giveaway. Roommates and visitors won't realize it's recording.

03

Free, no account, no recurring student-budget drain

Frequently asked

Is it legal to use a camera in my dorm room? +

Generally yes for spaces you personally occupy, but rules vary by school and country. In shared rooms, it's safer to inform roommates and avoid pointing the camera at their personal area. Avoid bathrooms and other private spaces entirely.

Can my roommate access the feed? +

No. Only the phone that scanned the original QR code can decrypt the stream. Even if your roommate gets the spare phone, they can't see what you're watching.

Will the spare phone overheat being on all day? +

It warms up but stays in safe ranges in a normal room. Keep some airflow around it.

What if someone notices the spare phone and turns it off? +

You'll see the feed cut on your viewer side. That itself is signal. If theft is a serious risk, hide the phone in a partially obscured spot (between books, behind a small object).

Can I use a really old iPhone like an iPhone 6? +

Yes. Call Pet runs on older iPhones. Battery health may be limited, so keep it plugged in.
